The red-tailed squirrel, with the scientific name Sciurus granatensis Humboldt, 1811, is a species of tree squirrel. Its native distribution spans from southern Central America to northern South America. Specifically, it is native to Central and South American countries including Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, as well as the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and Margarita. The Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species lists this species as introduced and invasive in Cuba. However, this reference applies only to a small population located along parts of the Rio Almendares margin in Havana, which escaped from the Havana Zoo. This squirrel can be found at elevations ranging from 0 to 3,000 m (0 to 9,843 ft). It inhabits many different types of forests, and can also be found in picnic grounds.
