About Scirpus atrovirens Willd.

Scirpus atrovirens, commonly called dark-green bulrush, is a perennial sedge native to wetlands in eastern Canada and the United States. It also goes by the alternate common names dark green bulsedge, black bulrush, and green bulrush. This species grows across a wide variety of wetland habitats, and generally prefers sunny locations over shady areas. It can be found in wet meadows, shrubby thickets, swamp openings, marshes, shorelines, and roadside ditches. The plant can reach a maximum height of five feet, and grows best in hardiness zones 3 to 9. It is closely related to Scirpus hattorianus and Scirpus georgianus, and mature fruits are required to identify it accurately.
