About Scinax x-signatus (Spix, 1824)
Scinax x-signatus (Spix, 1824), commonly called the Venezuela snouted treefrog or Venezuelan snouted treefrog, is a species of frog belonging to the family Hylidae. Its native range includes Brazil, the Guyanas (Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname), Venezuela, and Colombia. Introduced populations of this species have established on Guadeloupe, two smaller nearby islands (Marie Galante and La Désirade), and Martinique. Current research suggests this taxon may actually encompass more than one distinct species. Scinax x-signatus is a very common frog that lives in tropical savannas, forest edges, and open areas, and it is highly adaptable to human-caused habitat modification. On Guadeloupe, it is classified as an invasive species that threatens native frog populations through competition. For reproduction, breeding occurs in standing water, including both permanent and seasonal standing water bodies. Males produce mating calls from vegetation growing above and around ponds.
