About Schoenoplectus subterminalis (Torr.) Soják
Schoenoplectus subterminalis (Torr.) Soják is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family, with common names including water bulrush, water club-rush, and swaying bulrush. It is native to North America, where it occurs across many parts of Canada and the United States. It is common in the northeastern United States, eastern Canada, the Great Lakes region, and many mountain locations in the American West, but it is apparently absent from the Southwest and most of the Great Plains. This plant grows in moist and wet habitats, and often grows in shallow water, sometimes growing entirely submerged. It is a perennial herb that forms mats or tufts of very narrow cylindrical stems that easily reach lengths over one meter. It grows from a rhizome, which sometimes produces tubers. When growing in water, only the inflorescences and the tips of the leaf blades reach above the water surface. The inflorescence is usually a single cone-shaped spikelet located at the end of the stem, paired with a stiff, stem-like bract.
