About Schoenoplectus pungens (Vahl) Palla

Schoenoplectus pungens, commonly called threesquare, is a long-lived perennial herb that can reach up to 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches) in height. It has dense, rough, dark green foliage. Its small flowers are clustered into dense spikelets, with 1 to 7 spikelets growing on each stem, and it produces brown seeds. This species is closely related to Schoenoplectus americanus, and many specimens of Schoenoplectus pungens have long been misidentified as Schoenoplectus americanus. This plant grows in open, full-sun marshes, and along the shores of lakes and ponds, in water that is up to 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches) deep. Schoenoplectus pungens is fire-resistant.
