Its distribution includes the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, and San Luis Potosí, as well as the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas. Its natural habitat consists of dry, calcareous, rocky grasslands and open scrubby woodlands. Schoenocaulon texanum is an herbaceous bulbous perennial plant. It has basal, grass-like leaves, and its inflorescence forms a long, compact spike.
