Although most liverworts are very small plants that rarely exceed 19 centimeters in length, Schistochila appendiculata can reach up to 1.1 meters in height. It has a diameter of 2.6 centimeters, and its stem reaches 10 centimeters in diameter. This species is native to New Zealand, where it occurs on all three of the country's major islands: North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island. It grows in lowland forests.
