About Schistocerca nitens (Thunberg, 1815)

Schistocerca nitens (Thunberg, 1815) adult females measure 60–70 millimetres (2.4–2.8 in), while smaller adult males measure 40–50 millimetres (1.6–2.0 in). This species has mottled coloration, with grays, browns, and yellows, and a single stripe runs from the head to the thorax. This grasshopper reaches sexual maturity at 3 to 4 months of age. Any life stage of this species can be observed at any time of year, though adults are less active during fall and winter. Mating most often takes place on warm summer nights, frequently around bright lights.
