This species, scientifically named Sceptridium oneidense (Gilbert) Holub, has ternately compound leaf blades. Its spores reach maturity in late fall, growing in panicles that rise above the plant’s sterile fronds. Sceptridium oneidense grows in moist woodlands across eastern North America, ranging from New Brunswick to Ontario in the north and south to North Carolina. It is a relatively rare species in Canada, where it is usually found only within large colonies of Botrychium obliquum.
