About Sceptridium lunarioides (Michx.) Holub

Sceptridium lunarioides, commonly known as winter grapefern, is a fern species belonging to the Ophioglossaceae family. It is native to the southeastern United States, where it occurs in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. It is considered possibly extirpated from North Carolina. This species prefers open grassy habitats in prairies, cemeteries, and weedy roadsides. Like all other grape ferns, Sceptridium lunarioides relies on a mycorrhizal association in soil to survive.
