The chucao tapaculo, scientifically named Scelorchilus rubecula (Kittlitz, 1830), measures 18.5 to 19 cm (7.3 to 7.5 in) in length. Three specimens of unknown sex weighed between 42.6 and 45.4 g (1.50 to 1.60 oz), and one male specimen weighed 53.7 g (1.89 oz). Adult chucao tapaculos have dusky brown plumage on their upperparts. Much of the face, the throat, and the upper breast are rufous. The remaining portion of the breast is dark gray with white bars, while the flanks and vent are reddish brown to olive brown. This species occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft). It inhabits temperate, humid forests. It is most commonly found in Chusquea bamboo thickets within Nothofagus forest, but it also lives in secondary woodland.
