Scarus scaber Valenciennes, 1840 is a species that reaches a maximum length of 37 cm and a maximum weight of 900 g. This species is widely distributed across the Indian Ocean, including the islands within the region. Its range extends westward to the coast of Africa, reaching as far south as Natal and as far north as the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. To the east, its range reaches western Thailand and northwest Indonesia, extending southward to Cocos-Keeling. Individuals of this species are either solitary, or gather in small schools.
