About Scaphoideus titanus Ball, 1932
Scaphoideus titanus, commonly known as the American grapevine leafhopper, is an insect belonging to the leafhopper family Cicadellidae. It feeds on various plants from the Vitaceae family. This species is native to North America, but was accidentally introduced to Europe. In Europe, it has become a pest because it acts as a vector for flavescence dorée, a phytoplasma disease that affects grapevines. For mating, males must produce species-specific vibrational patterns to attract females. This mating process can be affected by reproductive interference, including human-caused vibrational mating disruption that is used as a method of pest control. Nymphs of this species do not participate in vibrational communication.
