Its scientific name is Scaphinotus unicolor (Fabricius, 1787). This beetle is found in North America, specifically within the states and district of Alabama, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. In this region, it lives in forests, and is often encountered along streams and near springs. Adult Scaphinotus unicolor are brachypterous (with short or underdeveloped wings) and nocturnal (active during the night).
