This species is found in North America, specifically across the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec, and the U.S. states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. In this range, it lives in coniferous forests, mixed forests, and deciduous forests, and it is often found in areas along streams and lakes. Adult Scaphinotus marginatus are brachypterous, meaning they have reduced or incompletely developed wings, and they are nocturnal, active during the night. These beetles prey on snails and slugs.
