Saxifraga rotundifolia L., also called round-leaved saxifrage, is a perennial herbaceous plant. It can grow to a height of 20 to 50 centimeters (7.9 to 19.7 inches). This species produces fleshy leaves that are arranged in a dense basal rosette. Each leaf is petiolate, with petioles reaching up to 10 centimeters long; the leaf blades are up to 5 centimeters across. They are dark green, hairy, simple, and shaped rounded or almost heart-shaped, with edges lined by numerous triangular notches. The flowering stems are erect, pubescent, and branched at the top. They carry narrow panicles of star-shaped flowers. Each flower has five lanceolate petals, which are usually white and covered with numerous tiny pink-purple specks. This plant blooms from April to August. Saxifraga rotundifolia L. is distributed across central and southern Europe, and can be found in the Iberian Peninsula, the Alps, and the Balkans. It prefers to grow in shady forests, damp areas, cliffs, stony soils, and stream margins, at elevations between 700 and 2,200 meters (2,300 to 7,200 feet) above sea level.
