About Saxifraga cernua L.
Saxifraga cernua L., commonly known as drooping saxifrage, nodding saxifrage, or bulblet saxifrage, is a flowering species widespread across the High Arctic. Its range extends further south into mountainous regions of the Alps, Norway, Iceland, Siberia, Scotland, and Alaska. It grows to a height of 10–20 cm, with stems bearing 3–7 leaves. Basal and lower stem leaves are kidney-shaped, 3–5 lobed, and grow on long petioles. Its flowers are mostly single and grow at the tip of the stem. The petals are white and much longer than the sepals. The species reproduces via brownish-red bulbils located in the axils of upper stem leaves. Flowering occurs from June to August. It grows in moist sandy and mossy habitats, on ledges, and in snow beds. It has been a protected species in the UK since 1975 under the Conservation of Wild Creatures and Wild Plants Act.
