Its leaves are green, papery, ribbed, and densely glandular, with an ovate to ovate-lanceolate shape. Leaf sizes range from (4-)10-20 cm long by (2-)5-10 cm wide. Each of its flower spikes resembles a lizard's tail. It is native to North-Central China, South-Central China, Southeast China, Hainan, Qinghai, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, the Philippines, and Vietnam. In traditional medicine, Saururus chinensis has been used to treat inflammation associated with a range of conditions including edema, gonorrhea, and asthma.
