About Saturnia pavoniella Scopoli, 1763

Saturnia pavoniella is a species of moth in the family Saturniidae. It can be found in alpine regions of Austria, Italy (including Sicily) and the Czech Republic, extending across south-eastern Europe to northern Turkey and the Caucasus. It may also occur in south-eastern France. Males have a wingspan of 45–70 mm (1.8–2.8 in), while females have a wingspan of 50–95 mm (2.0–3.7 in). Adult moths are active from February to June; populations in northern Greece are most commonly found in May. The larvae of Saturnia pavoniella feed on a wide range of plants. Recorded food plants include Betula, Calluna, Carpinus, Crataegus, Erica, Filipendula, Hippophae, Lythrum, Malus, Potentilla, Prunus spinosa, Pyrus, Quercus, Rosa, Rubus, Salix, Spiraea and Vaccinium. In northern Greece, the species prefers Rubus ulmifolius and Pyrus amygdaliformis as host plants for its larvae.
