About Sarracenia rosea Naczi, Case & R.B.Case
Sarracenia rosea is a pitcher plant species belonging to the genus Sarracenia, and is sometimes called Burk's southern pitcher plant. This species is native to the Gulf Coast of the Southeastern United States, where it has been recorded from Mississippi to Georgia. Its native habitat is threatened by ongoing land development in the region where it grows. Like Sarracenia psittacina, Sarracenia rosea readily colonizes drainage ditches alongside highways across the Gulf states. This creates a somewhat more stable, though less natural, habitat for the species. Even when growing in these drainage ditch habitats, however, the species remains at risk from herbicide spraying carried out by the Department of Transportation along highway rights of way. The herbicides used are primarily growth suppressants and broadleaf killers. Sarracenia rosea is noticeably more shade-tolerant than other species in the Sarracenia genus.
