About Sargocentron caudimaculatum (Rüppell, 1838)
Sargocentron caudimaculatum, commonly called the silverspot squirrelfish or whitetail squirrelfish, is a reef-associated fish species belonging to the family Holocentridae. This species is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with a range extending from East Africa to Japan and northern Australia, and eastward as far as the Marshall Islands. It lives in habitats near reefs, and can also be found in lagoons and drop-offs at depths ranging from 2 to 40 metres (6.6 to 131.2 ft). It acts as a nocturnal predator, feeding primarily on crabs and shrimps. The maximum recorded total length of this species is 25.0 centimetres (9.8 in). While it is caught commercially and sold in the aquarium trade, there are no known major threats to Sargocentron caudimaculatum at present.
