About Saltator maxillosus Cabanis, 1851
Saltator maxillosus Cabanis, 1851 measures approximately 19 centimeters in length. This bird is notable for its very thick, tall beak that is yellow at the base. Adults typically have dark gray upperparts with almost no green tint, a white eyebrow stripe starting at the base of the beak, and rusty underparts. Females of this species have green backs. Immature individuals have green upperparts and black beaks. Its vocalization consists of stanzas of four strong calls, with the third call being the loudest, and it begins singing from August onward. This species lives along forest edges and in gardens, and occurs locally in the high mountains of Southeast Brazil. Its overall range extends from Espírito Santo to Rio de Janeiro, and continues from there to the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and eastern Argentina.
