About Salpiglossis sinuata Ruiz & Pav.
Salpiglossis sinuata Ruiz & Pav. is an annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous plant. It typically grows 60 cm (2.0 ft) tall, and rarely reaches up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall. Its leaves measure 4–10 cm (1.6–3.9 in) long, are shaped elliptic to lanceolate, and have wavy, lobed or toothed margins. The species produces flowers with a five-lobed, funnel-shaped corolla, which can grow up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long and 5.5 cm (2.2 in) in diameter. Each lobe of the corolla has a notched apex, a velvety texture, and is either violet or orange, with contrasting darker stripes running along each petal. Of the two species in the genus Salpiglossis, Salpiglossis sinuata is the one more commonly grown as an ornamental garden plant. It was introduced to the northern hemisphere in the 1820s, and a number of cultivars have been selected to produce different flower colours. It is cultivated in full sunlight.
