About Salix calcicola Fernald & Wiegand

Salix calcicola, commonly called limestone willow or woolly willow, is a willow species native to the subarctic and Arctic regions of Canada. Its native range includes the Nunavut Islands, continental Nunavut, northern Quebec, and Labrador. It can also be found on the Arctic islands of Baffin, King William, Southampton, and Coats, located on the Boothia Peninsula. It is a low-growing shrub that typically has ovate leaves. Its catkins appear in early spring, before the tree’s new leaves emerge. This species has sometimes been classified as a subspecies of Salix lanata, but this classification has not been proven.
