About Salamandrina perspicillata (Savi, 1821)

Salamandrina perspicillata, commonly known as the northern spectacled salamander, is a species of salamander belonging to the family Salamandridae, and it is found exclusively in Italy. Following the work of Mattoccia et al. (2005) and Canestrelli et al. (2006), the IUCN Red List classifies Salamandrina perspicillata as a separate species from Salamandrina terdigitata, which occurs further south in Italy. This salamander has a long development period. After female northern spectacled salamanders spawn in a body of water, their eggs hatch into larvae. The larvae cannot be identified as this species until they complete development through metamorphosis, when the species' unique markings emerge.
