About Saimiri collinsi Osgood, 1916

Collins' squirrel monkey, scientifically named Saimiri collinsi Osgood, 1916, is a species of squirrel monkey that is endemic to Brazil. This taxon was formerly classified as a subspecies of the common squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus. It was elevated to full species status following a genetic study conducted by Jessica Lynch Alfaro and her colleagues. Males of this species have an average head and body length of approximately 38 cm (15 inches), paired with an average tail length of 37.6 cm (14.8 inches). Females of this species have an average head and body length of approximately 27 cm (11 inches), paired with an average tail length of 41.3 cm (16.3 inches). The diet of Collins' squirrel monkeys consists of palm fruits, legumes, insects, and bird eggs; they also occasionally eat lizards.
