About Sagittaria rigida Pursh

Sagittaria rigida, commonly known as sessilefruit arrowhead or Canadian arrowhead, is a species of aquatic plant. Unlike many other Sagittaria species such as Sagittaria latifolia, which have the iconic arrowhead-shaped leaves associated with the genus, Sagittaria rigida has narrow oval leaves. This species gets its scientific epithet rigida from the trait of having sessile female flowers. Its flowers match the typical appearance of other plants in the Sagittaria genus, with three white petals. The species is native to Canada and the United States, and has become naturalized in Great Britain. It grows in shallow water along the edges of ponds and streams. It produces edible potato-like tubers, but gathering and consuming these tubers can be dangerous if they are harvested from polluted water.
