About Sagittaria guayanensis Kunth
Sagittaria guayanensis Kunth, commonly called the Guyanese arrowhead, is a perennial aquatic plant species native to both the Old World and New World. It produces broadly hastate, arrow-shaped leaves with ovate lobes. Some authors have incorrectly spelled the species epithet as "guyanensis". Its type locality is not Guyana, but rather the Guayana region that is now part of eastern Venezuela; this area was considered part of Colombia at the time the type specimen was collected. This species is predominantly tropical. Its native range includes Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, most of South America, West Africa from Senegal to Cameroon, south and southeast Asia from Afghanistan to Taiwan to Indonesia, plus Sudan and Madagascar. It was not recorded in the United States until 1969, when a few populations were discovered in Louisiana. Populations of Guyanese arrowhead have also been found in the forests of Pilibhit, India.
