About Sabulina verna (L.) Rchb.

Sabulina verna (L.) Rchb. is a scarce species of flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. Its common names include spring sandwort, leadwort, golden moss, and Irish moss. It is a small, mat-forming perennial herb. Carl Linnaeus first described this species in 1767 under the name Arenaria verna, and it has several known synonyms, including Minuartia verna. Small 5-petalled flowers, measuring 7–9 mm across, grow on short, downy stems, blooming from spring through late summer. Its slender leaves each have 3 veins. The species ranges across temperate Eurasia and northwestern Africa, with a boreal-montane distribution. It typically grows on carboniferous limestone ground, and can also be found in short grassland, on exposed limestone pavement, on scree slopes, and on metal-rich soils including spoil heaps left from lead mining.
