About Ruspolia nitidula (Scopoli, 1786)

Ruspolia nitidula is a large, slender green species with a cone-shaped head. A cream-colored band runs through the apex of the head and continues through the eyes. Adult body length ranges from 32 to 60 mm (1.3 to 2.4 in). In both sexes, the wings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen. This species is capable of producing a high-pitched buzzing sound. It is native to central and southern Europe, Africa, and the Palearctic region of Asia. In Europe, it typically grows on riverbanks and other wet areas with long grass. Over recent decades, the species has been expanding its range northwards across Europe, and established populations now exist in southern Britain. In its range, this species can be found from July through October.
