About Rumex hymenosepalus Torr.

Rumex hymenosepalus Torr., commonly called canaigre, canaigre dock, ganagra, wild rhubarb, Arizona dock, and tanner's dock, is a perennial flowering plant native to the North American deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is a common food plant for ruddy copper larvae. The species has been cultivated in the southwestern United States for its roots, which are a good source of tannin used in leather tanning. It also produces a warm, medium brown dye. Young leaves and leaf stalks of Rumex hymenosepalus are considered edible. Older leaf stalks can be cooked and eaten like rhubarb, a plant that belongs to the same family.
