About Rothschildia erycina Shaw
Rothschildia erycina, commonly known as Rothschild's silk moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Saturniidae. It was first formally described by George Shaw in 1796. This moth species ranges geographically from Mexico to Brazil and Paraguay. Its natural habitats include tropical rainforest and wet savannah, and it can be found at altitudes up to 1,200 meters above sea level. The caterpillar larvae of this moth feed on plants from the species Ailanthus altissima, as well as species from the genera Coutarea, Exostema, Ligustrum, Antonia, Cenostigma, Chiococca, and Dodonaea. The larval stage of Rothschildia erycina lasts approximately 40 days. After the larval stage, the species pupates inside a large silken cocoon, and the pupal stage lasts between 3 and 4 weeks.
