Its scientific name, Rohaniella pygmaea Maassen & Weymer, 1886, was published in 1886, while the original description of the species occurred in 1885. The larvae of Rohaniella pygmaea feed on the plant Burkea africana. These larvae are eaten by people and regarded as a delicacy.
