The grey-throated martin, also known as the Asian plain martin, holds the scientific name Riparia chinensis (J.E.Gray, 1830). It is a small passerine bird that belongs to the swallow family. This species occupies open habitats including farmland, grassland, and savannah, and it typically stays close to water. Its geographic range extends from Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and the Indian subcontinent, east to southern China, Taiwan, and the northern Philippines. Formerly, it was classified as a subspecies of the plain martin, a species that has since been renamed the brown-throated martin.
