About Riodina lysippus (Linnaeus, 1758)
This description covers the upper and lower wing surfaces of Riodina lysippus. On the upperside, all wings are chocolate black. The forewings, also called anterior wings, have an orange line that starts around the middle of the anterior edge, crosses the wing toward the anal angle, bends sharply at that angle, and ends at the posterior edge. The angulated hindwings, also called posterior wings, have a circular orange line that starts at the anterior edge near the corner, crosses the wings, and meets itself near the anal angle. On the underside, the wings share the same chocolate black base colour as the upperside, and also have the same orange markings. A few white spots sit on this orange line in the forewings. Between this orange line and the wing base, there are several faint, dull dirty grey oblong spots: four on the anterior wing, and about twenty on the posterior wing. The base of the anterior margin of the fore wings, and the anal margin of the posterior wings, are red in colour.
