About Ricania speculum (Walker, 1851)

Ricania speculum (Walker, 1851) is a species of planthopper. Adults of this species reach approximately 8 millimetres (0.31 in) in length, with a wingspan of about 15 millimetres (0.59 in). They have dark brown wings that feature central wavy horizontal bands and irregular transparent patches of varying sizes. On the forewings, the precostal area has dense transverse veinlets, and the costal margin is distinctly convex close to the base. Male individuals have a pointed abdomen tip, while female individuals have a rounded abdomen tip. Final instar nymphs are white with dark brown markings, and have waxy secretions on their abdomen. This species is naturally widespread across China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam. It has recently been accidentally introduced to northern Italy, most likely carried there with ornamental plants or crops. Ricania speculum occurs in low-elevation mountain areas and favors dark environments.
