About Ribes binominatum A.Heller
Ribes binominatum A.Heller is a low, spreading shrub that grows no taller than one meter (40 inches), and is often much shorter. Each node along its stem holds three spines that reach up to 2 centimetres (3โ4 inch) in length. Its leaves are hairy and glandular, 2 to 5 cm (3โ4 to 2 inches) long, 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) wide, and deeply divided into 3 or 5 rounded, toothed lobes. The inflorescence is either a solitary flower or a raceme of up to four flowers, which hangs from the branches. The flower has five fuzzy sepals that are pale green, sometimes edged with red, and are reflexed upward. At the center is a tubular corolla made of white or pinkish petals, surrounding five stamens and two shorter styles. The fruit is a yellowish-green berry about 1 cm (3โ8 inch) wide, covered in long prickles that harden into spines. This species is native to the Klamath Mountains and the adjacent northern California Coast Ranges, located in far northern California and western Oregon. It grows in higher-elevation forests and meadows.
