About Rhynchospora holoschoenoides (Rich.) Herter

Rhynchospora holoschoenoides (Rich.) Herter, commonly called fly beaksedge, is a member of the sedge family Cyperaceae. This species is a perennial herb, distributed across the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and western and southern Africa. It grows to heights between 40 and 130 centimeters, and occurs in swamps and ponds. The species has distinctive spherical spikelets located at the ends of its branches, a feature it shares with Rhynchospora rubra subsp. africana. It can be told apart from this relative by its spikelets growing on multiple branches; in contrast, R. rubra has only a single spikelet on its central stem.
