About Rhynchonycteris naso (Wied-Neuwied, 1820)
Rhynchonycteris naso is a small bat species. It reaches approximately 6 centimeters in total length, and averages around 4 grams in body weight. Among populations in northern South America, males average 56 millimeters long, while females average 59 millimeters long. This bat’s tail measures about 16 millimeters long. Pregnant females of this species can reach a maximum weight of 6 grams. Rhynchonycteris naso inhabits lowland areas across most of its range. Its distribution covers the entire Central America, extends into southeastern Mexico, and covers the northern half of South America. South of Ecuador, this species is restricted to areas east of the Andes; its range reaches southward into the northern half of Bolivia and most of Brazil. It rarely occurs at elevations above 300 meters. It typically lives close to wetland environments, and is commonly found near water in riparian forests, pastures, and swamps.
