The technical description and variation of Rhyacia simulans Hufnagel, 1766 is as follows. Its wingspan measures 45–60 mm. It resembles Epipsilia latens Hbn., but is larger. Its forewing is paler, and the stigmata have distinct pale and dark outlines. The pyrophila Schiff variant is ochreous grey. The suffusa Tutt variant is darker, with a blackish grey forewing. The latens Stph. variant is unicolorous black, with even more intense markings. This is a grey or greyish-brown moth. Its forewing is pale grey or greyish-brown, with small kidney and ring markings edged in black, and more or less distinct double dark intermediate lines that delimit the central field of the wing. In dark specimens, the outer edge of the forewing is usually a little lighter than the rest of the wing. Its hind wing is grey.
