About Rhodofomes cajanderi (P.Karst.) B.K.Cui, M.L.Han & Y.C.Dai
Rhodofomes cajanderi is a perennial shelf fungus. It can be identified by its small-to-medium-sized, fleshy, tough fruiting body that has a downy or crust-like top surface. It grows to around 3โ10 cm (1.2โ3.9 in) wide. The top surface is pink when young, fading to grey, brown, or black, and has a distinct clear margin. Both the interior of the conk and the undersurface are rosy pink. The fungal body is rigid and grows up to 1 cm thick. It has 3โ5 round pores per millimeter. It produces a whitish spore print, and it is classified as inedible. This species is widespread across western North America, and is more common in southern climates. It shows a particular preference for high-altitude spruce forests.
