About Rhododendron viscosum (L.) Torr.
Rhododendron viscosum (L.) Torr., commonly known as swamp azalea, clammy azalea, or swamp honeysuckle, is a flowering plant species belonging to the heath family Ericaceae. This deciduous shrub reaches 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in both height and width, and is native to the eastern United States. It bears rounded, matte green leaves. In early summer, it produces funnel-shaped white flowers with a pink flush; these flowers have prominent stamens and carry a strong fragrance. It is hardy to temperatures as low as −20 °C (−4 °F), but like most rhododendron species, it needs a sheltered spot in dappled shade, growing best in acid soil enriched with leaf mold. When cultivated in the United Kingdom, this species has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
