About Rhododendron hyperythrum Hayata

Rhododendron hyperythrum Hayata, known in Chinese as Nánhú dùjuān (南湖杜鵑) and wēixiào dùjuān (微笑杜鹃), is a species of rhododendron endemic to north-central Taiwan, where it grows at altitudes between 900 and 1,200 m (3,000–3,900 ft). It is an evergreen shrub that reaches a maximum size of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). Its leaves are leathery, shaped as elliptic-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, and measure 7–12 cm long by 2–3.5 cm wide. An unusual feature of this species is its pure white flowers. This plant naturally stays compact in size and blooms profusely, which makes it a popular choice for small gardens.
