The cap of Rhodocollybia maculata can grow up to 9 centimetres (3+1โ2 inches) wide, and is cream-colored with red-brown spots. The cap edge stays inrolled for a long time. Its crowded whitish gills develop spots as they age. The stipe is the same whitish color as the gills, grows up to 10 cm long, is tough, hollow, and tapers downwards. The spore print of this species ranges from whitish to yellowish. There is a recognized variety called scorzonerea, which is distinguished by having yellowish gills, and sometimes a yellowish stipe.
