It is native to freshwater habitats with a pH between 6.8 and 7.8, a water hardness of 20 DH, and a temperature range of 10 to 25 °C (50 to 77 °F). When spawning, females deposit their eggs inside bivalves. The eggs hatch inside the bivalves, and the young fish stay there until they are able to swim.
