About Rhizomnium punctatum (Hedw.) T.J.Kop.
Rhizomnium punctatum (Hedw.) T.J.Kop. has upright stems ranging from 10 to 100 mm tall. Its leaves are oval or egg-shaped, and are typically broader above the middle. Unlike the similar species Rhizomnium magnifolium and Rhizomnium pseudopunctatum, this species has non-slender rhizoids that grow in the leaf axils. Its capsules are 5 mm long, and are carried on setae that measure 20 to 30 mm. Rhizomnium punctatum is native to most of Europe and North America. It also occurs in the Azores, Madeira, North Africa, Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran, and extends east through Asia to Siberia. It is distributed across all parts of the British Isles, though it is less frequent in Ireland. In eastern Britain, it has a more scattered range stretching from Cambridge north to Kingston upon Hull. It can also be found on the Isles of Scilly, Orkney, Shetland, and the Isle of Man.
