About Rhipidura javanica (Sparrman, 1788)

The Sunda pied fantail, with the scientific name Rhipidura javanica, is also commonly called the Malaysian pied fantail. It is a bird species that belongs to the fantail family. In the Malay language, it has the local name murai gila, which translates directly to "crazy thrush". This species was previously classified as the same species as the Philippine pied fantail. This fantail can be found in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. It lives in a broad range of environments including forest, scrub, parks, agricultural lands, and other types of degraded habitat. It is restricted to lowland areas, only occasionally reaching elevations as high as 800m, and is most often found near bodies of water.
