About Rhionaeschna mutata (Hagen, 1861)
Rhionaeschna mutata, commonly known as the spatterdock darner, is a species of darner dragonfly belonging to the family Aeshnidae. This species is native to North America. Spatterdock darners select ponds as their reproductive habitat. They specifically prefer small, heavily vegetated, semi-permanent or ephemeral ponds that have no fish, feature wooded riparian edges, and contain sphagnum moss. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assessed Rhionaeschna mutata as "LC", or least concern, meaning there are no immediate threats to the survival of the species. The species has a stable population, and this IUCN conservation status was last reviewed in 2017.
