About Rhinolophus formosae Sanborn, 1939

The Formosan woolly horseshoe bat, scientifically known as Rhinolophus formosae, is a bat species that belongs to the family Rhinolophidae. This species is endemic to Taiwan, and it can be found in primary forests at low to middle altitudes in central Taiwan. It roosts in a variety of locations, including caves, buildings, tunnels, and irrigation conduits. The IUCN Red List classifies this species as Least Concern, though it almost meets the criteria to qualify as a threatened species under criterion B1, which measures the extent of occurrence of a species' geographic range. Its population is currently decreasing as a result of deforestation in Taiwan's lowlands, but the species is known to occur in at least one protected area. Formerly, the Formosan woolly horseshoe bat was classified as a subspecies of the woolly horseshoe bat, but it is now recognized as a distinct species.
