About Rhinolithodes wosnessenskii Brandt, 1848

Rhinolithodes wosnessenskii, also known as the rhinoceros crab, is a species of king crab, and it is the only species that belongs to the genus Rhinolithodes. The species is named in honor of Ilya Gavrilovich Voznesenski. This crab can be found at depths ranging from 6 to 73 metres (20 to 240 ft) in the north-east Pacific Ocean, spanning from Kodiak, Alaska down to Crescent City, California. Full-grown R. wosnessenskii have a carapace that reaches 7 centimetres (2.8 in) across; the carapace is triangular in shape and bears a deep semicircular depression. The crab's legs are covered with spines and long setae. It inhabits crevices on rocky or gravel bottoms, and individuals are only rarely encountered. The genus Rhinolithodes is likely a sister genus to Phyllolithodes.
